[Jot+ Notes Wishlist] Default tab stops and Indents

Post subject: Default tab stops and Indents
Posted: 04-Jul-2010 10:07

As a Brit in favour of metrication, I always use metric units. So I would like to use a default tab spacing of 1 cm. So I do what the Help says, viz go to Format > Tabs... and set Default tab stops to 1.00 cm. But when I create a new note, I find its default tab stops is 1.27 cm. Which appears to contradict the statement in the Help that "This setting is specific to the notefile".

Next, I would hope, nay expect, that indenting (using <ctrl>M) would use the default tab spacing. But it clearly doesn't. Moreover, I can find no way to set this value.

The result is that, on the few occasions that I've created a new Jot file in the eight years I've been using Jot+, I have usually managed to remember the struggle I had the previous time, but have completely forgotten that what I'm trying to do is, as it turns out, impossible.

Oh how I wish this could be sorted out

You should definitely consider using XML for this - it's more work, but it does handle child notes.
In the Jot+ Notes "extras" folder - c:\Program Files\King Stairs\Jot+ Notes\extras (on most computers) - you will find jot3.dtd, which describe the Jot+ Notes XML format in detail.
Michael

Good morning.

I have created a file with up to 100 Parent notes, using the Import option with the usual seperator.

Example:

=====
A
=====
B
=====
C
=====
etc.

Now i need to import severall Child notes into a Parent note.

Example:

=====
A
1
2
3
4
=====
B
1
2
3
4
=====
C
1
2
3
4
=====
Etc.

Is there an possibilty to create such a file???

TIA
Andre Linoge

This comes under the heading of "by design" - it's worked this way for years, and I'm pretty sure up until now no one has asked for this particular printing feature to operate any differently.

The print dialog does need to be redone, among other reasons to make it more consistent with the standard Windows print dialog. Re-doing the page printing behavior will probably be part of that, though I cannot commit as to when that will be implemented.

Sorry, I don't have a quick work-around for this, other than to copy the note to a new, temporary notefile and print specific pages of that temporary notefile.

My better printer died (did duplexing) and my new one doesn't, so I need to print pg 1, then reinsert paper and print page 2.
I thought this used to work. Just went from 3.4.3 up to 3.6.0 to see if that helped, but it didn't.

If I click on Print/scope/pages, and tell it print page 1, it prints the very first note in that Jot+ file, not page 1 of this note.
As I have no idea what the current page is in the entire file, this doesn't help me.

Anyhow, if a single note is selected, I cannot access the 'pages' fields at all.
What have I missed?

Hi. First off, try updating to the current version - Jot+ Notes 3.6.0 - it's not likely to change anything but the possibility must be eliminated.

Three notefiles exhibiting problems all of a sudden is unheard of. I would strongly suggest checking the hard disk for errors and running some full anti-virus and anti-spyware checks as a precaution, in case this is a symptom of a more serious problem.

If that doesn't get you anywhere, please contact us for support directly, as we'll need to get more detailed information from you that shouldn't be posted in a public forum.
Michael

I have used Jot+ Notes for a lot of years now, with no problems at all ... until now.
In trying to open Note files--I have six of them--three open normally (they are ones I don't use much) and the other three, often used, render an error message "unable to load document...unable to determine file format". Windows recognizes the program; when I double-click the file icon in Explorer, Jot launches but the file won't load.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled (it's version 3.3.0) but to the same results. Renaming the backup files doesn't help; same result. Can you help me recover these files?

Jan W.

At this time King Stairs Software products are not supported for the Windows 7 platform.

Per company policy we do not provide any support for unreleased versions of Microsoft Windows - if you do use our products with Windows 7 pre-release, be sure to back up your notefiles regularly to avoid potential loss of data. Also, be sure to use only current releases of our software, as that is most likely to be compatible with Windows 7.

Once we receive the final (RTM) version of Windows 7 we will update our software as needed to fully support Windows 7.

You do realize that you can add your own icons to the list? Tools | Options, Display, Note Icons.

There are plenty of websites out there with free (at least for personal use) quality icons and images that you can use with Jot+ Notes. Currently Jot+ Notes only supports BMP/ICO formats, but there are plenty of utilities which will convert from GIF or PNG to BMP/ICO.

Michael J Marshall
King Stairs Software

Jot+ Notes and Jot+ Convert between them support a very wide range of export formats, at least one of which you should be able to use now with the Blackberry (or your PDA of choice). I'm not familiar with what Blackberries support, so I cannot point out a particular format.

We can certainly look into adding additional PDA-compatible formats, as long as the format is publicly documented.

Michael J Marshall
King Stairs Software

Any chance you could develop a version to run on Blackberry and other PDAs? Even a read-only version would be very helpful. A full-feature version that could be synched with a desktop or laptop would be heaven. Due to tightened security in my government workplace I can no longer plug a thumb drive or portable hard drive into my work computer. This has cost me the use of my Jot+ "rolodex" when at the office.

As you may notice, the forum software has been upgraded to the most current release.

The new software has improved visuals, speed, and security, yet for users should still be as easy to use as before. All of your user accounts and posts were migrated and should be fully accessible.

The only feature missing from the old software is the RSS feed - that should be available again shortly. (UPDATE May 12th: RSS support is now restored; you may need to re-subscribe within the software you use for viewing RSS feeds).

If you encounter any problems or have comments on the new forum, please get in touch.

This is the first stage in a complete overhaul of the King Stairs Software website. Unfortunately there is no "automatic" method for specifying a relative file link.
But, since Jot+ Notes gets to "see" the URL before sending it to Windows, it can manipulate that URL - in this case to handle file-relative URL's.

I'll add it to the wishlist.

[Jot+ Notes Wishlist] Multiple Icons for note title

Post subject: Multiple Icons for note title

It would be very helpful to allow multiple icons in the title of notes.
The note file I use extensively, in part, has all of the months and under that all of the days of the month. Each day has a calendar icon. On certain days I would like to show an additional icon indicating an event ie. paydays may have a $ icon or birthdays may have a cake icon, meetings may have a book icon etc. There could be a meeting and birthday all on payday in which case there would be all of the above mentioned icons assigned to the title. I tried pasting a an icon in the title itself but this does not work. What to you think?

[Jot+ Notes Wishlist] Global Font Change

It would be great if text font could be change globally.
For instance if you have a large note file with hundreds of notes (which I do) that all use Times New Roman or a mix of fonts and you want all of the font to be changed to Arial. Also, if the font attributes could be change globally. Such as color, size, bold, etc. A command to do this would be outstanding.
