[Jot+ Notes General] Re: Cannot save jot file. Please help

Post subject: Problem solved by clearing 'read only' of backup file
Posted: 04-Apr-2012 15:19

I solved my own problem.
Somehow, either I or Windows set the .jot.bak file to 'read only', hence jot could not delete the backup file and abandoned the 'save' command. There was no internal problem with 'jot'. (Perhaps it might have been coded to be tolerant that it could not delete the backup file.) The problem was environmental and could be fixed simply outside of jot: One just brings up the properties panel in the file explorer for the .jot.bak file and clears the 'read only' field for the file. Exit from properties panel and retry to save the jot data file and the save completes normally. Just to be absolutely clear, here is the field to clear:

When I try to save a jot+ file, I get this message in a dialog box:

------------------------------------------------
Warning [Jot+ Notes]
-------------------------------------------------
Unable to save document:
Reason: Unable to delete backup file
C:\Users\george\Documents\towson courses\COSC716,Object-Oriented Methology\notesAndDiary.jot.bak
Reason: Access is denied.
[#5]
------------------------------------------------
I'm including a snapshot of the state of the .jot.bak file which does exist. I use this file alot, so this is not a first usage. I've not manipulated the jot.bak file, so I don't know what could be causing the problem.

Is there a fix or workaround?

Regards,
George Snead

[Jot+ Notes General] Problem with Excell object in note

Author: George Snead
Post subject: Problem with Excell object in note
Posted: 26-Oct-2011 13:40

Hello;

I used the Jot capability to embed an excel spreadsheet into a jot note, via the route :
edit > insert > object ... > [Insert Object dialog box: select 'Create New' radio button, select Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet, click 'OK' ]
Initial creation went smoothly. I created a 4 column by 5 row spreadsheet which I could see in the note.

The problem came when I chose to edit that note and add some additional rows. I clicked on the spreadsheet object and it was highlighted with a border with 'pull blocks along the sides and corners. With the mouse pointer on the selected spreadsheet object, I hit the right button to bring up the context menu. From it, I chose 'Microsoft Office Excel Spreadsheet > Edit '. This behaved as expected: the spreadsheet opened and I added the new rows. After completing my edits, I chose to exit via 'file > close & return to jot+ notes 3'. This went normally without warning, but when I looked at the jot note, the new rows were absent. I thought that the problem might be simply that the object needed to be selected and enlarged to display the new rows. So, I did select it and 'pulled' at the expansion blocks.

Here's the unexpected behavior: Stretching the object region only enlarged the type and changed the font (but in a chaotic way where letters overlay one another in a hard to read fashion). Stretching the object did not reveal the new rows, which was my expectation.

I chose to insure that my new rows were in the spreadsheet by going back thru these steps: select spreadsheet object in the jot note; push right mouse button to bring up context menu; select 'Microsoft Office Excel Spreadsheet > Edit '. The spreadsheet materialized and my new rows were present in the spreadsheet.

Since the rows were present, I explored options that might be necessary to make the new rows visible. I re-tried 'file > close & return to Jot+ notes 3' without success. I tried 'file > update' without success. There are no sensible options to simply 'save', so that did not help.

Is this a known problem? Or, am I overlooking the proper way to make visible the edits after the initial creation of a object?

Please try to reproduce my problem. If my experience is a known problem with Jot, is there a way to make the enlargement of the spreadsheet object with more rows and columns, visible in the jot note?

Regards and thank you for a very functional and durable product.

George Snead

Is Jot+ Notes telling you anything before it closes? I'd expect some kind of error message, even if it's only a Windows APPCRASH report.

If you can, please e-mail your Help|System Info details to support@kingstairs.com - that should suggest any potential conflicts.

Have you tried just rebooting your computer?

If that doesn't do it, then something has to have changed on your computer in the last week: A Windows update, new software or an updated version, etc. It could also be a new update from your Antivirus.

One solution is to use System Restore to revert your computer to last week - that might undo whatever is causing your problem.

I recommend a full system check (Anti-virus, spyware, etc) in case this Jot+ Notes problem is a symptom of something unwanted on your computer.

Hope that gets you somewhere!

This week I have been unable to keep Jot+ Notes open for more than a couple of minutes. Jotview is working OK so am still able to access my data, but I cannot change it. I have done nothing peculiar to my computer. Removing and reinstalling Jot hasn't helped - nor has using the current Beta version, nor has using different Windows compatibility modes. I've never had problems till now - and I've been using Jot since version 1.

Have registered copy of 3.6.2 (651).
Have been using Jot+ since version 1, so am not inexperienced.

Have been using it with a Notefile containing several hundred notes.
Used it constantly yesterday.
Opened it this morning. Could not add or edit. The dreaded READ ONLY.

Looked for lock file.
Searched computer for .jlk files. None on computer.

Tried saving the file under another name to a different disk/folder.

No change. Still cannot edit or add to file.

Any ideas?

To avoid potential confusion (ironically) the final version number (e.g. 3.7.0) is only used for the final release.

Still says 3.6.2 (651) - glad its not my memory playing tricks!!!

Happy New Year

Phil

The most important point to understand is that the MS RichEdit control used in Jot+ Notes has no concept of "styles" as used in word processors. Jot+ Notes' "Style Macros" are an attempt to provide formatting shortcuts - they're called "Macros" because they effectively add formatting to text.

The online help covers Style Macros in detail (and their limitations), as well as other formatting tasks.

I believe this is already on the wishlist - it's something that would work well in a plugin.

I think beesquare is looking to actually run jot+ on his pda. Anyway, that's what I would like to do on my new android phone. Just to be clear what would be really great is a jot+ 'app' that will run on android and allow me to view my jot files on my phone. just viewing the text would be great, and editing it as well a real bonus.

Any chance of that Michael?

Phil
